What Is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing. Pigment is implanted into the skin to create or enhance features such as eyebrows, eyeliner and lip colour.

Terms such as microblading, ombré brows, powder brows, combination brows, hairstroke brows and semi-permanent makeup describe different techniques, but pigment has still been placed into the skin.

Although cosmetic tattoos are often described as semi-permanent, they do not always disappear evenly. Pigment can remain for years, change colour, blur, migrate or become unsuitable as facial features and fashion preferences change.

Consultation and assessment before permanent makeup removal

Microblading

Fine manual strokes intended to resemble eyebrow hairs. Pigment depth and composition can vary significantly.

Powder or Ombré Brows

Machine shading creates a filled or graduated brow effect and may contain several layers of pigment.

Combination Brows

Hairstrokes and shading are combined, so different sections can contain different pigment density and depth.

Eyeliner Tattoo

Pigment is placed close to the lash line. Removal requires specialist eye protection and careful case selection.

“Semi-permanent” does not mean easy to remove. Cosmetic pigment can contain complex blends designed to create natural-looking browns, taupes, blacks, reds, yellows and flesh tones.

How Laser Permanent Makeup Removal Works

A suitable laser wavelength delivers a very short pulse of energy into responsive pigment. Larger pigment particles are fragmented into smaller pieces, which the body gradually processes over time.

The current appearance, likely pigment mixture, skin type and previous treatment history are reviewed.

Different pigment colours absorb different wavelengths. One wavelength cannot reliably treat every cosmetic colour.

Visible fading develops over the following weeks. Further colour components may become apparent as the brow changes.

Cosmetic tattoo removal is often a colour journey

The first laser session may not simply make the brow lighter. It may reveal red, orange, pink or yellow pigment that was previously mixed beneath a darker brown or black appearance.

Why Consultation and Patch Testing Are Essential

The exact ingredients in a cosmetic tattoo are not normally visible from the surface. Two brows that look similar can respond very differently because pigment brands, colour correctors, depth, age and previous treatments vary.

A patch test is informative, not a guarantee. Different sections of the same brow can contain different colour mixtures, depth and scar tissue, so later areas may not behave identically.

Why eyebrows can change colour

Why Do Eyebrow Tattoos Turn Red, Orange or Yellow?

Natural-looking brow pigments are often created by blending several colour components. A brown pigment may contain black, red, orange, yellow and white ingredients in different proportions.

When laser treatment reduces one component more effectively than another, the remaining colour becomes easier to see. This is commonly described as colour unmasking.

Visible stage What may be happening Possible next step
Dark brown or black A darker component may dominate the appearance before treatment. A suitable dark-pigment wavelength may be considered after consultation and patch testing.
Red or pink The dark component may have reduced, revealing a warm pigment underneath. A different wavelength may be required after the skin has fully healed.
Orange Red and yellow components may remain in a changing proportion. Further treatment depends on the true colour, skin type and patch-test response.
Yellow A resistant yellow component may be the final visible pigment. Yellow can be difficult to target and may not respond adequately to available wavelengths.
Grey, blue or green cast Pigment chemistry, depth, migration or colour correction may affect the visible result. Reassessment is required before choosing another wavelength or removal method.
Sudden darkening White, flesh-toned or iron-containing cosmetic pigment may have changed after laser exposure. Pause treatment and review the healed patch before any further procedure.

Can Yellow, White or Flesh-Toned Pigment Be Removed?

Yellow Pigment

Yellow often absorbs available tattoo-removal wavelengths poorly and can remain after darker or red components have reduced.

White Pigment

White and pale ingredients can be resistant and may darken after laser exposure rather than becoming lighter.

Flesh-Toned Corrector

Camouflage pigment can contain white, beige, red or yellow components and may respond unpredictably.

Unexpected darkening can be permanent

Some pale cosmetic pigments can change to grey, blue-grey or black following laser exposure. A cautious patch test is particularly important, and laser may not be the appropriate pathway for every pale or corrected brow.

Can Yellow Eyebrow Pigment Be Removed?

How Many Sessions Does Eyebrow Tattoo Removal Take?

There is no honest fixed number. Some brows respond quickly, while others require a staged course because several pigment components appear one after another.

Pigment Colour

Dark pigment may respond differently from red, orange, yellow, white or corrected cosmetic colours.

Number of Applications

Repeated top-ups and colour corrections can create several pigment layers at different depths.

Technique and Depth

Microblading strokes, machine shading and older deep cosmetic tattoos may respond differently.

Pigment Brand and Chemistry

The visible colour does not reveal the exact ingredients or how they will change with laser.

Previous Removal

Laser, saline, acids or other removal attempts can alter colour, texture and healing response.

Skin Response

Settings and intervals must remain appropriate for the skin even when faster fading is desired.

Your End Goal

Complete clearance, partial fading or preparing for a future brow correction may require different endpoints.

Residual Yellow or Pale Pigment

A course may stop when the remaining colour no longer responds safely to the available treatment.

Realistic expectation: eyebrow tattoo removal may be a staged colour process rather than a simple fade from dark to invisible. Complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

Treatment close to the eye

Eyeliner Tattoo Removal

Selected eyeliner tattoos may be suitable for laser removal, but treatment beside the eye requires a specialist pathway. Standard external goggles do not protect the eye adequately when pigment sits directly on or very close to the eyelid.

Where treatment is appropriate, correctly fitted internal ocular shields may be required. These shields sit over the eye after suitable preparation and must only be used by a trained practitioner following an appropriate protocol.

Eyeliner colour, migration, pigment depth, previous procedures, eye health, skin condition and the position of the tattoo all affect suitability.

Eyeliner removal should never be treated as ordinary body tattoo removal

The proximity of the eye changes the safety requirements. Treatment should only proceed after a dedicated consultation and with the appropriate eye-protection pathway.

Comparing removal pathways

Saline vs Laser Eyebrow Tattoo Removal

Laser and saline removal work in different ways. Neither is automatically the correct choice for every eyebrow tattoo.

High-Risk or Damaged Skin

Where significant scarring, active skin disease, poor healing, recent procedures or other risks make further trauma inappropriate.

A combined or staged plan may occasionally be discussed, but the skin must fully recover between methods. Repeatedly switching procedures without adequate healing can increase inflammation and scarring risk.

Nanosecond vs Picosecond for Cosmetic Tattoos

Nanosecond and picosecond describe the duration of the laser pulse. A picosecond pulse is shorter, but pulse duration alone does not decide whether a cosmetic tattoo is suitable or whether a difficult colour can be removed.

Wavelength, delivered energy, fluence, spot size, beam quality, pigment chemistry, skin type, treatment technique, eye protection and healing intervals all contribute to the result.

What Does Permanent Makeup Removal Feel Like?

Most clients describe a fast snapping, hot-pricking or elastic-band sensation. Eyebrow treatment is usually brief, although discomfort varies with density, skin sensitivity and the treatment area.

During Treatment

  • Fast snapping or hot-pricking sensation
  • Temporary whitening or frosting
  • Watery eyes during brow treatment
  • Heat or tenderness
  • A brief treatment time for most brows

Immediately Afterwards

  • Redness and swelling
  • Temporary raised texture
  • Darkening or brightening of pigment
  • Small pinpoint bleeding in some cases
  • Tenderness similar to sunburn

Over the Following Days

  • Swelling gradually settles
  • Temporary dryness or crusting
  • Colour may continue to change
  • The brow can appear darker before it fades
  • Meaningful fading develops over several weeks

Balanced information

Risks, Side Effects and Limitations

Permanent makeup removal is not risk-free. Correct assessment, conservative treatment planning, adequate intervals and careful aftercare reduce risk but cannot remove it completely.

Permanent makeup may already contain scar tissue

Repeated microblading, machine passes, colour corrections, saline procedures or earlier removal attempts can alter the skin before laser treatment begins. As pigment fades, existing texture may become more noticeable.

Permanent Makeup Removal Aftercare

Always follow the individual instructions provided at your appointment. The advice below is general and does not replace guidance based on your own treatment response.

During the First 24–48 Hours

  • Keep the area clean and avoid unnecessary touching
  • Use cooling only as advised and never place ice directly on the skin
  • Avoid rubbing, scratching or picking
  • Do not apply brow makeup over broken or irritated skin
  • Sleep with the head slightly elevated if swelling is noticeable
  • Use only products specifically recommended for the treated area

While the Skin Is Healing

  • Avoid swimming, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs
  • Avoid intense heat and strenuous exercise if swelling worsens
  • Do not remove crusts or burst blisters
  • Avoid acids, retinoids, exfoliants and irritating skincare
  • Avoid tinting, waxing, threading or further brow procedures
  • Protect the area from sunlight and tanning

Do not judge the final colour immediately. Swelling, frosting, inflammation and pigment oxidation can temporarily change how the brow appears. The healed result must be assessed before another treatment decision is made.

Contact the clinic if healing is worsening

Seek advice for increasing pain, spreading redness, increasing heat, pus, fever, significant swelling, eye symptoms, extensive blistering, delayed healing or any reaction that concerns you.

The immediate appearance is not the final result. Sufficient time is allowed for the pigment and skin response to become clear.

Agree the First Full Treatment

If the patch remains suitable, settings and the treatment area are agreed. Some brows may be treated in stages rather than all at once.

Healing and Pigment Clearance

The skin is allowed to recover and the body is given time to process fragmented pigment. Sessions are not rushed.

Review the New Visible Colour

The brow may now appear lighter, warmer or different in tone. The next wavelength or treatment pathway is chosen from the healed result.

Stop When Further Laser Is No Longer Appropriate

Treatment may end with residual yellow, pale or resistant pigment if further laser would offer little benefit or create unnecessary risk.

Can every eyebrow tattoo be completely removed?

No. Some cosmetic tattoos clear very well, while others leave resistant yellow, pale, grey or shadow pigment. Complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

Why did my eyebrow tattoo become red after the first laser session?

The darker component may have reduced first, revealing red or pink pigment that was already part of the original colour mixture.

Can red or orange eyebrow pigment be treated?

Some red and orange pigment can respond to a suitable wavelength, but skin type, tanning, exact pigment chemistry and patch-test response must be considered.

Can yellow eyebrow pigment be removed?

Yellow is often difficult to target and may absorb available wavelengths poorly. Further laser is not always appropriate when yellow is the final residual colour.

Why can white or flesh-toned pigment turn dark?

Some pale cosmetic pigments can undergo a chemical colour change after laser exposure and appear grey, blue-grey or black. A patch test is particularly important.

Can darkened cosmetic pigment be treated again?

Sometimes the new dark colour may respond to another laser pathway, but this is not guaranteed. The patch must heal fully before reassessment.

How many sessions will eyebrow tattoo removal take?

The number varies with pigment colour, depth, layering, previous top-ups, colour correction, skin response and the final treatment goal.

How long should I wait between eyebrow removal sessions?

The interval must allow the skin to heal and pigment clearance to continue. The appropriate timing is confirmed from the individual response and may be extended during the course.

Will laser remove my natural eyebrow hair?

Temporary hair lightening or shedding can occur. Permanent hair loss is a recognised risk, although the treatment is directed at tattoo pigment rather than hair removal.

Can I tint or laminate my brows after removal?

Not while the skin is healing. Tinting, waxing, threading, lamination and active skincare should wait until the area has fully settled and the clinic confirms it is appropriate.

Can I wear eyebrow makeup after treatment?

Do not apply makeup over broken, blistered, crusted or irritated skin. Follow the individual aftercare given at your appointment.

Can eyeliner tattoo be removed safely?

Selected eyeliner tattoos may be suitable for specialist treatment with appropriate internal eye protection. Not every case is suitable.

Does eyeliner removal damage eyelashes?

Temporary lightening or shedding may occur and lash protection is important. The individual risks are discussed during consultation.

Is saline removal safer than laser?

Not automatically. Saline removal is an invasive skin procedure and also carries risks including infection, prolonged healing, pigment change and scarring.

Can I alternate saline and laser removal?

A staged combination may occasionally be considered, but the skin must fully recover and each method must be selected for a clear reason. Repeated trauma can increase scarring risk.

Does picosecond always remove cosmetic tattoos better?

No. Pulse duration is only one factor. Wavelength, energy, beam quality, pigment chemistry, skin type, technique and healing intervals all matter.

Can a patch test guarantee that the full brow will respond the same way?

No. A patch test provides useful information, but different sections of the brow may contain different pigment mixtures, depths and scar tissue.

Can permanent makeup removal leave scars?

Yes. Scarring is a recognised risk, particularly where the skin has been repeatedly tattooed, previously scarred, treated too aggressively or disturbed during healing.

Can I have permanent makeup removal while pregnant?

Pulsar does not perform laser tattoo removal during pregnancy. Other medical circumstances should be discussed during consultation.
