Why Does Melanin Matter More in Darker Skin?
Hair-reduction devices deliver controlled light that is absorbed by melanin within suitable hair. The energy becomes heat and can affect structures responsible for future growth.
Melanin is also present in the surrounding skin. As epidermal pigment increases, there is less separation between the colour of the target and the skin, so the choice of technology, pulse delivery, settings and cooling becomes increasingly important.
The aim is selective heating. Enough energy must reach the suitable hair while unnecessary heating of the skin is limited.
Natural tone, recent tanning and uneven pigmentation are considered separately.

How Do Technology, Settings and Cooling Protect the Skin?
Safety cannot be decided by the words “laser,” “diode” or “IPL” alone. The practitioner must consider wavelength or light spectrum, pulse duration, energy delivery, spot size, repetition method, contact, cooling and technique as one system.

Settings must suit the skin, hair and area rather than being copied from another client or device.
Effective Cooling
Appropriate cooling helps protect the epidermis and can improve comfort during treatment.

Why Is Patch Testing Important?
A patch test allows selected settings to be tried on a small area before wider treatment. It gives the practitioner information about immediate response and how the skin settles afterwards.
The test must be assessed after the required observation period. Treatment should not proceed simply because the skin looked acceptable in the first few minutes.
A patch test belongs to a specific plan. A previous test does not automatically cover a different device, setting, body area, tan or changed medical history.
Skin and hair can differ across separate treatment sites.
Some heat or pigment reactions may become clearer after leaving the clinic.
Unexpected pain, blistering, darkening or lightening must be disclosed.
New tanning, medicines, illness or skin changes may require another review.

Why Can Tanning Make Treatment Unsafe?
A client’s natural skin tone is their baseline. A tan is an increase in pigment following ultraviolet exposure or a visible colour change from a cosmetic product. Both real and artificial tanning can interfere with safe assessment.

Recent ultraviolet exposure can increase epidermal melanin and treatment risk.
Sunbeds
Sunbed use must be disclosed and may require the appointment to be postponed.
Fake Tan
Artificial tan can prevent reliable assessment and should be fully removed according to clinic instructions.
Sunburn
Sunburnt, peeling, inflamed or recently damaged skin must not be treated.
Do not hide recent sun exposure
Treatment may need to be postponed even when an appointment has already been booked. Protecting the skin takes priority over maintaining the original schedule.

Temporary Warmth
Mild warmth or tenderness can occur and should settle according to the advice provided.
Perifollicular Redness or Swelling
A short-lived response around suitable hairs can occur, although redness may be less visually obvious in deeply pigmented skin.
Burns and Blistering
Marked pain, blistering, raw skin or crusting is not a desired treatment endpoint and requires contact.
Hyperpigmentation
Post-inflammatory darkening can follow excessive heat or inflammation and may take time to settle.
Hypopigmentation
Loss of pigment can create lighter areas and may be prolonged or, rarely, permanent.
Texture Change or Scarring
These are uncommon but recognised risks, particularly after significant injury or disrupted healing.
Infection
Broken skin can become infected and needs appropriate clinical or medical advice.
Paradoxical Hair Growth
Fine facial or neck hair can sometimes become more noticeable, so unsuitable targets may be declined.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?
Many darker skin tones can be treated safely, but treatment requires suitable technology, conservative individual settings, effective cooling, an experienced practitioner and careful assessment. No skin tone should be treated from a colour label or photograph alone.
Why does darker skin need extra care during laser hair removal?
Hair-removal light targets melanin in the hair, but melanin is also present in the skin. As skin pigment increases, the practitioner must create a safe separation between the intended hair target and surrounding skin to reduce the risk of excess heating.
What are the risks of laser hair removal on darker skin?

Can Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI have laser hair removal?
Some clients with Fitzpatrick types V and VI can be treated, but suitability depends on the actual device, wavelength, pulse delivery, cooling, practitioner competence, hair target and individual skin presentation. Pulsar confirms its available pathway after consultation rather than making a blanket promise.
Does a patch test prove laser hair removal will be safe?
No. A patch test provides useful information about the skin’s response to selected test settings, but it cannot guarantee that no reaction will occur during a course. Health, medicines, tanning and skin presentation must be reviewed at every visit.
Can tanned darker skin be treated?
Natural skin tone and a recent tan are not the same. Tanning adds melanin and can increase treatment risk, so recent sun exposure, sunbeds and fake tan must be disclosed. Treatment may need to be postponed until the skin has returned to its normal baseline.
Is diode laser suitable for darker skin?
Some diode systems can treat a range of skin tones when the wavelength, pulse duration, settings, cooling and practitioner technique are appropriate. The word diode alone does not establish suitability, so Pulsar assesses the complete system and individual client.
Is IPL suitable for darker skin tones?
