Which Hair Colours Respond to Laser Hair Removal?
Hair-removal laser and IPL need a useful pigment target inside the follicle. Black and dark brown hair usually respond most predictably; pale blonde, red, grey and white hair often contain too little suitable pigment for reliable treatment.

Why Does Hair Pigment Matter?
Laser and IPL hair reduction deliver controlled light that is absorbed by melanin within suitable hair. That light is converted into heat, helping to damage structures responsible for future growth.
If the hair contains very little suitable melanin, insufficient energy may reach the follicle. Making the device stronger cannot manufacture a missing target and may only increase skin risk.
Hair colour is not the same as skin colour. The practitioner must identify a useful target within the hair while protecting melanin within the surrounding skin.
Dark pigment within suitable hair provides the intended target.
Heat is conducted towards growth structures within the follicle.
Repeated treatment across different growth cycles can reduce suitable hair over time.

How Is Each Hair Colour Likely to Respond?
These categories are a starting point, not a remote diagnosis. Natural hair can contain several shades, and the practitioner must inspect the actual growth under appropriate lighting.

Black Hair
Black terminal hair normally contains abundant melanin and often provides the clearest target. Thickness, skin tone, area and growth stage still influence results.
Dark Brown Hair
Dark brown hair can respond very well, particularly when coarse and dense enough to provide a strong target.
Medium or Light Brown Hair
Response becomes less predictable as pigment and thickness reduce. Similar-looking brown hairs can behave differently.
Dark Blonde Hair
Some darker blonde hair may contain visible pigment, but suitability cannot be assumed. Fine dark-blonde growth can remain a weak target.
Very Pale Blonde Hair
Very pale blonde hair generally contains too little suitable pigment for reliable laser or IPL hair reduction.
Red or Auburn Hair
Red pigment is not targeted effectively by conventional hair-removal systems. Mixed darker auburn hairs require assessment without a promised response.
Grey or White Hair
Grey and white hair generally lacks enough melanin to respond. Dark hairs mixed through the area may be treatable, but pale hairs will remain.
Dyeing pale hair dark does not make the follicle suitable
Hair dye changes the visible shaft, not the natural pigment target within the follicle. Bleaching also makes assessment harder and should not be used before consultation.

Coarse Terminal Hair
Coarse, dark terminal hair usually provides a larger and more predictable pigment target than fine growth.
Medium Hair
Medium-thickness hair may respond, but colour, density, area and treatment history become increasingly important.
Fine or Downy Hair
Fine vellus-like hair may contain too little targetable pigment even when it appears brown against the skin.
Two brown hairs can respond differently. A coarse dark-brown underarm hair and a fine light-brown facial hair do not represent the same treatment opportunity.

Does Skin Tone Change Which Hair Can Be Treated?
Skin tone does not change a white hair into a useful target or prevent a black hair from containing melanin. It changes how carefully technology, settings, cooling and technique must separate the hair target from pigment in the skin.

Safe treatment depends on appropriate equipment, technique and practitioner judgement. A photograph or colour label cannot replace consultation and patch testing.
More treatment is not always better
Fine Facial Hair and Paradoxical Increased Growth
Fine or downy hair is a weak target and may not absorb enough controlled energy to produce useful reduction. This is particularly important when clients request treatment across broad facial or neck areas containing mixed hair.
Paradoxical hypertrichosis is a recognised adverse effect in which hair growth increases or becomes more noticeable in or around a treated area. Research has found a strong association with face and neck treatment.
Pulsar may decline unsuitable fine hair
Declining treatment can be the safest and most honest recommendation. Treating every visible hair is not automatically in the client’s best interests.
One coarse patch may sit beside much finer untargetable growth.
Treatment should remain within clearly agreed suitable zones.
Fine, sparse or downy hair may not justify light-based treatment.
Unexpected increased growth should be reported and reassessed.
Pigment does not explain every outcome
How Do Hormones Affect Hair-Colour Suitability?
Hormonal influence can change where hair appears, how quickly it returns and whether new follicles become active. It does not make pigment-poor hair responsive to laser.
Dark Coarse Hair May Respond
Suitable terminal hairs may reduce even when PCOS, menopause or another hormonal influence contributes to their growth.
New Hair May Appear
Treatment cannot stop hormones from stimulating different follicles later, so further sessions or maintenance may be needed.
Sudden Change Needs Attention
Rapid or unexplained growth with other symptoms may warrant assessment by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Which hair colour responds best to laser hair removal?
Black and dark brown terminal hair usually provides the strongest melanin target. Response still depends on thickness, growth stage, treatment area, skin tone, settings, timing and individual biology.
Does laser hair removal work on brown hair?
Dark and medium brown hair can often respond well when it is sufficiently pigmented and coarse. Light brown or fine hair may be a weaker target, so Pulsar assesses the actual hair rather than relying on a colour label alone.
Does laser hair removal work on blonde hair?
Very pale blonde hair usually contains too little suitable pigment for reliable laser or IPL hair reduction. Darker blonde hair can vary and requires in-person assessment, but treatment should not be promised simply because some colour is visible.
Does laser hair removal work on red hair?
Red hair usually responds poorly or not at all because its pigment composition is not an effective target for conventional hair-removal laser and IPL systems. Auburn or mixed darker hairs must be assessed individually, without guaranteeing a response.
Can grey or white hair be treated with laser hair removal?
Grey and white hairs generally lack enough melanin for laser or IPL to target effectively. Dark hairs remaining within a mixed grey area may still be assessable, but the grey or white hairs themselves should not be expected to respond.
Why does hair thickness matter for laser hair removal?
Coarse terminal hair usually contains a larger, clearer pigment target than very fine or downy hair. Two hairs described as the same colour can therefore respond differently because their diameter and pigment content differ.
Can fine facial hair be treated with laser hair removal?
Fine or downy facial hair can be a weak and unpredictable target. Treating unsuitable fine hair also carries a recognised risk of paradoxical increased growth, so Pulsar may advise against treatment even when the hair looks slightly dark.
Can darker skin tones have laser hair removal?
Many darker skin tones can be treated, but hair colour and skin tone are separate parts of the assessment. Technology, settings, cooling and technique must be chosen carefully because melanin is also present within the skin.
Can I dye dark hair before laser hair removal?
No. Hair dye changes the visible shaft but does not create the pigment target needed inside the follicle. Dyeing white, grey, blonde or red hair dark does not make it suitable for laser hair removal.
