Immediately after treatment

Your Essential Aftercare Checklist

Your practitioner may adjust these instructions for the technology, area and skin response. Where your appointment advice differs from generic online guidance, follow Pulsar’s individual instructions.

Do

Help the Skin Settle

  • Use gentle cooling only as advised.
  • Keep hands and clothing clean around the area.
  • Wear loose clothing where rubbing is likely.
  • Protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light.
  • Allow shedding hairs to release naturally.
  • Contact Pulsar early if you are concerned.
Do not

Avoid Added Heat and Irritation

  • Do not rub, scratch or pick the skin.
  • Do not apply ice directly to the area.
  • Do not use hot baths, saunas or steam rooms.
  • Do not use fragranced or active products too soon.
  • Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate.
  • Do not deliberately tan or use sunbeds.

Aftercare timing is individual. Continue restrictions for the period Pulsar advised and until warmth, redness and sensitivity have settled—not merely until a clock says they should have.

Expected temporary responses

What Can Be Normal After Treatment?

Light energy creates controlled heat around suitable follicles. A temporary skin response can therefore occur even when treatment has been performed appropriately.

Normal reactions should move towards improvement. The exact appearance and duration vary with the area, hair density, skin and treatment response.

Take a sensible baseline. If you are worried, a clear photograph taken in consistent light can help you describe how the response is changing when you contact Pulsar.

1

Warmth

The area may feel warm or mildly sunburnt shortly after treatment.

2

Redness

Temporary redness may occur across the skin or around individual follicles.

3

Follicular Swelling

Small raised bumps around treated hairs can be part of the immediate response.

4

Tenderness or Sensitivity

The skin may feel more delicate and should be protected from rubbing and heat.

Normal reactions should not keep intensifying

Contact Pulsar if pain, heat, redness or swelling is increasing rather than settling, or if you develop blistering, crusting, discharge, spreading redness or delayed healing.

Comfort without extra injury

Cooling, Washing and Clothing

Cooling

Use a Clean Cool Compress

Use only the method advised by Pulsar. Keep cooling gentle and brief rather than pressing hard against sensitive skin.

Important

Never Apply Ice Directly

Frozen material can injure skin. Always avoid direct contact and do not numb the area so heavily that you cannot monitor it.

Washing

Use Comfortable Water

When washing is permitted, avoid very hot water, vigorous rubbing, exfoliating cloths and strongly fragranced cleansers.

Drying

Pat Rather Than Rub

Use a clean soft towel and gentle contact. Do not scratch or pull at raised follicles or shedding hairs.

Clothing

Reduce Friction

Loose, breathable clothing can help underarms, bikini, intimate, torso and leg areas remain more comfortable.

Hands

Avoid Touching

Do not repeatedly feel, squeeze or inspect follicles with unwashed hands.

Limit heat, sweat and rubbing

Exercise, Swimming, Saunas and Daily Activities

You may feel well enough for normal daily tasks, but activities that create heat, sweat, chemical exposure or friction can aggravate recently treated skin.

Return to activity safelyReview Common Activities After TreatmentFollow Pulsar’s timing and wait longer whenever the area remains warm, red or sensitive.8 activities
Heat and sweat

Strenuous Exercise

Avoid intense exercise for the period advised. Resume gradually once the area is calm and activity will not cause painful rubbing.

High heat

Saunas and Steam Rooms

Avoid these while the skin recovers because heat and moisture may worsen discomfort and irritation.

Water and chemicals

Swimming Pools

Wait for Pulsar’s advised period and until skin is intact and comfortable before returning to chlorinated shared water.

Heat and shared water

Hot Tubs

Avoid hot tubs during early recovery because heat and water exposure can irritate recently treated skin.

Temperature

Hot Baths and Showers

Use comfortably cool or lukewarm water rather than exposing warm, sensitive skin to more heat.

Friction

Cycling and Tight Sportswear

Consider the treated area: repeated rubbing may be especially uncomfortable after bikini, intimate, thigh or underarm treatment.

Environment

Outdoor Activity

Protect exposed areas from ultraviolet light and avoid conditions that create excessive heat, dirt or rubbing.

Area-specific

Sexual Activity

After intimate treatment, avoid activity that causes heat, sweat or friction for the period advised and until the skin feels fully comfortable.

Reintroduce products carefully

Skincare, Deodorant, Makeup and Active Products

Recently treated skin can be more reactive. Keep products simple and follow the instructions provided for your area rather than assuming every cosmetic is safe immediately.

Products after treatmentWhen Can Everyday Products Be Restarted?Wait until the advised time and until skin is calm, intact and no longer unusually sensitive.8 product groups
Underarms

Deodorant and Antiperspirant

Wait as instructed and avoid application while skin is hot, stinging, broken or markedly sensitive.

Facial areas

Makeup

Reintroduce only when allowed and skin is calm. Use clean tools and avoid rubbing during application or removal.

Simple care

Moisturiser

Use only a product approved or advised for you. Stop and contact Pulsar if it causes stinging, rash or worsening redness.

Avoid early

Fragrance and Aftershave

Fragranced products may irritate recently treated skin and should be withheld for the advised period.

Active skincare

Retinoids and Acids

Do not rush to restart retinoids, glycolic, salicylic or other active acids. Follow area-specific instructions.

Mechanical irritation

Scrubs and Exfoliating Tools

Avoid abrasive scrubs, brushes, mitts and aggressive exfoliation until Pulsar says the skin is ready.

Tanning

Fake and Gradual Tan

Do not apply tanning products to recently treated skin or during the course outside Pulsar’s instructions.

Hair removal

Depilatory Cream

These products can irritate skin. Do not use on the treatment area unless Pulsar has confirmed when it is appropriate.

Patch-test advice is not permission to improvise. If you were given a specific product or restart time, follow that instruction. Contact Pulsar before adding something new to irritated skin.

Between appointments

Shaving, Shedding and Hair That Looks Like Regrowth

Treated hairs do not always disappear immediately. They can remain within the follicle and move towards the surface before loosening naturally. This may look as if the hair is continuing to grow.

Shedding can be uneven across the area and may occur over days or weeks. It should not be forced by picking, tweezing or aggressive exfoliation.

Shedding is not an instruction to pluck. Pulling hairs from the follicle disrupts the target needed for future treatment and can irritate recovering skin.

1

Let the Skin Settle

Do not shave while the area is hot, blistered, crusted, broken or significantly irritated.

2

Shave Only When Comfortable

Follow Pulsar’s timing and use a clean razor with gentle technique.

3

Allow Natural Shedding

Do not scratch, squeeze, tweeze or force treated hairs from the skin.

4

Preserve the Next Target

Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate anywhere within the treatment area.

Protect recently treated skin

Sun Exposure, Sunbeds and Tanning Products

Ultraviolet exposure

Avoid Deliberate Tanning

Do not sunbathe during the course and follow Pulsar’s advice for covering and protecting exposed areas.

High-risk exposure

Do Not Use Sunbeds

Sunbeds expose the skin to ultraviolet radiation and can affect the safety of future treatment.

Product colour

Avoid Fake Tan

Do not apply fake or gradual tan to the treatment area within the course outside Pulsar’s instructions.

Tell us about any tanning or sunburn before your next appointment

A visible colour change, sunburn, peeling or recent ultraviolet exposure may require the next treatment to be postponed. Do not conceal it or attempt to scrub it away.

Know when to ask for help

Warning Signs After Laser Hair Removal

Most reactions are temporary, but early communication matters when the pattern is unexpected. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms are worsening.

Worsening Pain or Heat

Discomfort should move towards improvement rather than become progressively more intense.

Increasing or Spreading Redness

Contact Pulsar if redness expands, becomes markedly hotter or is accompanied by increasing tenderness.

Blistering or Crusting

Do not burst, peel or pick the area. Contact Pulsar promptly for individual instructions.

Marked or Persistent Swelling

Seek advice if swelling is severe, worsening, unusual for you or affects function.

Discharge or Infection Signs

Report discharge, an unpleasant smell, worsening tenderness or spreading inflammation.

Pigment or Texture Change

Tell Pulsar about unexpected lightening, darkening, indentation, thickening or delayed healing.

Contact Pulsar promptly

Send clear details of the area, when symptoms began, whether they are worsening and any products or activities involved. Photographs may assist initial review but do not replace medical assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for severe symptoms

For breathing difficulty, collapse, rapidly developing widespread swelling, severe eye symptoms or another medical emergency, call 999. If urgent advice is needed and it is not an emergency, use NHS 111.

Frequently asked questions

Laser Hair Removal Aftercare FAQs

What is normal after laser hair removal?

Temporary warmth, redness, tenderness and small raised bumps around follicles can occur. These reactions often resemble mild sunburn and should gradually settle. Follow Pulsar’s individual aftercare and contact the clinic if the reaction is worsening or not settling as expected.

How should I cool my skin after laser hair removal?

Use only the gentle cooling method advised by Pulsar. A clean cool compress may help discomfort. Do not place ice or frozen material directly against the skin, and avoid rubbing or pressing hard on the area.

Can I shower after laser hair removal?

Follow the instructions given for your area and response. When washing is permitted, keep the water comfortably cool or lukewarm, use gentle products and avoid scrubbing, hot showers and friction while the skin remains warm or sensitive.

When can I exercise after laser hair removal?

Avoid strenuous exercise and activities that create substantial heat, sweat or friction for the period advised by Pulsar and while the area remains warm, red or sensitive. Resume gradually once the skin has settled.

Can I swim or use a sauna after laser hair removal?

Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms for the period advised by Pulsar. Heat, chemicals, shared water and friction can irritate recently treated skin.

When can I use deodorant, makeup or skincare after laser hair removal?

Wait for the period advised for your area and until the skin is calm before reintroducing products. Begin with simple, non-irritating products and avoid fragrance, acids, retinoids, scrubs and other active products until Pulsar says they can be resumed.

When can I shave after laser hair removal?

Shave only when the skin feels comfortable and according to Pulsar’s instructions. Use a clean razor and gentle technique. Do not shave over blistered, crusted, broken or significantly irritated skin.

Can I wax or pluck between laser hair removal sessions?

No. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating remove hair from the follicle and disrupt the target needed for the next treatment. Do not pull out shedding hairs; allow them to release naturally.

Why does hair look as though it is growing after laser hair removal?

Treated hairs can remain in the follicle and move towards the surface before loosening and shedding over the following days or weeks. This can resemble growth but is not necessarily new hair. Do not force or pluck the hairs out.

When should I contact Pulsar after laser hair removal?

Contact Pulsar promptly for worsening pain, increasing heat or redness, marked swelling, blistering, crusting, discharge, spreading redness, unexpected pigment or texture change, or delayed healing. Seek urgent medical help for severe symptoms such as breathing difficulty or rapidly developing widespread swelling.
