Does Laser Tattoo Removal Leave Scars?

Scarring is a recognised risk of laser tattoo removal, but it is not an inevitable outcome. Many tattoos also contain scar tissue from the original tattooing process, which can become more noticeable as the ink fades.

Can Laser Tattoo Removal Cause Scarring?

Yes, scarring is a recognised risk of laser tattoo removal. However, permanent scarring is not expected after every treatment and many clients heal without lasting texture change.

The purpose of careful treatment planning is to fragment suitable pigment while limiting unnecessary injury to the surrounding skin. This requires appropriate wavelength selection, energy delivery, treatment intervals, skin assessment and aftercare.

No clinic should promise that scarring is impossible. A responsible consultation explains both expected temporary reactions and the less common possibility of permanent texture change.

Can a Tattoo Already Contain Scar Tissue?

Yes. Scar tissue may be created during the original tattooing process, particularly where the skin was repeatedly worked, overworked, infected or healed poorly.

Raised or Shiny Texture

Some tattoos feel raised, firm, shiny or uneven before any laser treatment has taken place.

Dense Outlines

  • Keep the area clean and avoid unnecessary touching.
  • Avoid tight clothing, rubbing and friction.

  • Do not pick crusts or peeling skin.
  • Use cooling only as advised and never apply ice directly.

Avoid Irritation

  • Avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms while healing.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise when heat or friction affects the area.
  • Do not apply fake tan, acids, retinoids or irritating products.
  • Protect the area from direct sun and tanning.
  • Contact the clinic if healing differs significantly from the advice given.

What laser can and cannot change

Will Removing the Ink Improve Existing Texture?

Laser tattoo removal is designed to target tattoo pigment. It should not be sold as a scar-removal treatment.

Pigment May Fade

The tattoo may become lighter or clearer as suitable pigment responds.

Scar Tissue May Remain

Raised, indented, shiny or uneven texture can remain after pigment has reduced.

Texture May Look More Visible

The dark ink may previously have hidden or distracted from the scar underneath.
