Scarring is a recognised risk of laser tattoo removal, but it is not an inevitable outcome. Many tattoos also contain scar tissue from the original tattooing process, which can become more noticeable as the ink fades.

The honest answer
Yes, scarring is a recognised risk of laser tattoo removal. However, permanent scarring is not expected after every treatment and many clients heal without lasting texture change.
The purpose of careful treatment planning is to fragment suitable pigment while limiting unnecessary injury to the surrounding skin. This requires appropriate wavelength selection, energy delivery, treatment intervals, skin assessment and aftercare.
No clinic should promise that scarring is impossible. A responsible consultation explains both expected temporary reactions and the less common possibility of permanent texture change.
Important: A successful patch test and previous uncomplicated healing reduce uncertainty but cannot guarantee that every later treatment will heal without complication.
Scarring may pre-date laser treatment
Yes. Scar tissue may be created during the original tattooing process, particularly where the skin was repeatedly worked, overworked, infected or healed poorly.
Some tattoos feel raised, firm, shiny or uneven before any laser treatment has taken place.
Heavily worked outlines may contain more pigment and more underlying texture than lighter shading.
Dark ink can disguise surface irregularity. As the pigment fades, existing scar texture may become easier to see.

Expected reactions are not automatically scars
Blisters can occur after treatment and may heal without permanent texture change. Deliberately bursting, picking or removing the blister roof can increase infection and scarring risk.
What can increase risk?
Excessive energy, unsuitable spot size or inappropriate wavelength selection can increase tissue injury.
Recent sun exposure or tanning increases melanin activity and can increase burn and pigment-change risk.
Repeated treatment before full recovery can create cumulative irritation and delayed healing.
Removing blisters or crusts and rubbing the area can damage healing tissue.
Infection can prolong inflammation and increase the risk of permanent texture change.
Previously damaged skin may respond less predictably and can appear more obvious as pigment clears.
Medication, health conditions, circulation and individual scar tendencies may affect healing.
Trying to force faster clearance can lead to unsafe treatment decisions and unnecessary risk.
Safe treatment planning
Risk cannot be removed completely, but a structured pathway helps reduce avoidable complications.
Responsible treatment: Sometimes the safest decision is to reduce settings, extend the interval, treat a smaller area, repeat a patch test or decline treatment.

Follow the individual aftercare given at your appointment. General guidance includes:
Ask for advice early
Contact Pulsar if you are uncertain about the reaction or if the area appears to be worsening rather than gradually settling.
Increasing or severe pain, especially when combined with heat, redness or discharge, should be assessed.
Spreading redness, pus, unpleasant discharge, fever or feeling unwell needs prompt advice.
An open area that is not healing, persistent blistering or marked swelling should not be ignored.
Seek urgent medical help for a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty, rapidly spreading swelling, severe pain, extensive blistering or signs of serious infection.
What laser can and cannot change
Laser tattoo removal is designed to target tattoo pigment. It should not be sold as a scar-removal treatment.
The tattoo may become lighter or clearer as suitable pigment responds.
Raised, indented, shiny or uneven texture can remain after pigment has reduced.
The dark ink may previously have hidden or distracted from the scar underneath.
After removal: Once tattoo treatment is complete and the skin has fully settled, separate scar-management advice may be considered with an appropriately qualified professional.
