SMP removal does not always mean clearing the entire scalp. The correct approach depends on what has gone wrong, what still looks acceptable and what you want to achieve next.
Selective SMP Fading
Targeted lightening of a low or harsh hairline, isolated dark patches, oversized dots or other specific areas while retaining suitable surrounding work.
Fading Before External Correction
Controlled reduction of unwanted density or shape to give an experienced independent SMP practitioner greater flexibility for future correction or rework.
Full SMP Removal
A staged removal plan for clients who no longer want their scalp micropigmentation or require a more complete reset before deciding what comes next.

SMP Problems We Assess and Treat
Each scalp and pigment behaves differently. We first identify whether the concern relates to colour, depth, density, placement, dot size or the original hairline design.
Blue, Grey or Green Colour Change
Old or poorly healed SMP can develop an unwanted colour cast. Pigment composition and response are assessed before a wider treatment plan is agreed.
Hairline Too Low or Too Harsh
Selective fading can soften, lift or reshape an unnatural front edge before correction, without automatically treating the whole scalp.
Oversized, Blurred or Migrated Dots
Heavy or poorly healed impressions can appear larger than natural follicles. Treatment is planned according to their distribution and depth.
Excessive or Uneven Density
Overworked, patchy or poorly blended sections may be selectively reduced to create a more balanced base for future work.
Fading Before Correction Elsewhere
The goal may be controlled reduction rather than complete clearance. Pulsar provides laser fading only; any future pigment work is arranged independently after appropriate healing.

For clients seeking a clean reset, treatment progresses in stages with healing and pigment response reviewed before every subsequent session.

Active Q-Switched Nanosecond SMP Removal
We do not market this service as pico laser treatment. Pulsar’s Chorley clinic uses the Asclepion NanoStar Y, a German-engineered active Q-switched nanosecond laser. Short laser pulses create a photoacoustic effect within suitable pigment so it can fragment and be gradually processed by the body.
1064 nm Assessment
Commonly selected for black and other suitable darker pigments. Wavelength and settings are chosen only after assessing the SMP colour, skin type, depth and patch-test response.
532 nm Assessment
May be considered for suitable warm-toned pigment components where clinically appropriate. Cosmetic and SMP pigment blends can respond unpredictably, making assessment essential.
Why a Patch Test Matters
A patch test helps us observe the immediate and delayed response before treating a wider area. It does not guarantee the response of every dot or pigment layer.
Important: SMP inks are not all manufactured or implanted in the same way. Colour change, mixed pigment, depth, density, layering, previous treatments and individual healing can all affect the result. Significant fading or clearance may be possible, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

How SMP Removal Works at Pulsar
We use a staged process that allows the scalp to heal and gives us time to evaluate how the pigment is responding.
Consultation
We discuss the original SMP, your concern, medical history, Fitzpatrick skin type, scalp condition and whether the goal is fading, correction or full removal.
Assessment & Patch Test
We examine colour, dot size, depth, density and placement, photograph the area where appropriate and test a suitable representative section.
Laser Treatment
Appropriate wavelength, spot size and energy are selected around the assessed pigment and observed response. Larger projects may be divided into sections.
Healing & Review
The scalp is allowed to recover before progress is reviewed. The next treatment is adjusted according to clearance, healing and the agreed end goal.

Sessions, Intervals and Realistic Expectations
There is no reliable fixed session number for every SMP removal. A light selective correction can require fewer appointments than dense, layered or full-scalp removal.
What Influences the Number of Sessions?

- Depth, density and number of implanted layers
- Size of the scalp area being treated
- Previous laser or correction work
- Your skin response, healing and clearance
- Whether the goal is selective fading or full removal
How Long Between Treatments?
Appointments are commonly spaced around 6–8 weeks apart, although longer healing intervals may be advised. We do not rush repeat treatment simply because the surface looks settled.
- Each session is reviewed individually
- Progressive fading continues between appointments
- Further treatment proceeds only when the scalp is ready
- Correction work should wait until appropriate healing is complete

- Avoid tanning, sunburn and fake tan on the scalp
- Tell us about medication, medical or skin changes
- Do not treat irritated, broken or infected skin
- Keep the scalp clean and free from heavy products
- Do not scratch or aggressively exfoliate the area
- Follow the preparation supplied after consultation
After Treatment
- Redness, swelling, whitening, tenderness or blistering can occur
- Keep the scalp clean and follow your written aftercare
- Avoid picking, scratching and deliberately opening blisters
- Avoid heat, heavy sweating, swimming and friction while healing
- Protect the scalp from direct sun once fully healed
- Contact the clinic if you are concerned about the response

SMP Removal Is Different From Body Tattoo Removal
Scalp micropigmentation is normally implanted to imitate hair follicles and may be placed more superficially than a conventional body tattoo. Treatment still relies on pigment-targeting laser principles, but the planning must account for scalp anatomy, hair-bearing areas, dot distribution, hairline design and the possibility of future SMP correction.

Is SMP removal performed with a pico laser?⌄
No. Pulsar uses the Asclepion NanoStar Y, a German-engineered active Q-switched nanosecond laser. We describe the technology accurately rather than marketing it as pico.
Can scalp micropigmentation be fully removed?⌄
Significant fading or full clearance may be possible in suitable cases, but it cannot be guaranteed. The outcome depends on pigment composition, colour, depth, density, layering and individual response.
Can you fade SMP for correction rather than remove everything?⌄
Yes. Selective fading is commonly considered for harsh hairlines, overly dense sections, isolated large dots or preparation before improved SMP work.
Can you treat blue, grey or green SMP?⌄
These concerns can be assessed, but colour alone does not confirm how an SMP pigment will respond. The pigment blend, depth, skin type and patch-test response must be considered before treatment.
How many SMP removal sessions will I need?⌄
There is no fixed number. Selective fading may require fewer sessions than full-scalp removal, while dense, deep or layered pigment may require a longer staged plan.
How long should I wait between sessions?⌄
Treatments are commonly spaced around 6–8 weeks apart, although longer intervals may be recommended according to scalp healing, treatment extent and pigment response.
Will SMP removal damage my hair follicles?⌄
Treatment is planned to target suitable pigment while respecting the scalp and surrounding hair-bearing areas. Temporary hair lightening or shedding can occur, and no laser procedure is entirely risk-free. Suitability and risks are discussed before treatment.
Does SMP removal hurt?⌄
Sensation varies, but clients commonly describe a rapid snapping or hot-pricking feeling. The treatment area and density affect the experience, and cooling is used where appropriate.
Do I need a consultation and patch test?⌄
Yes. Consultation and patch testing are required so we can assess your skin, scalp, pigment and goal before agreeing a treatment plan.
Does Pulsar apply new SMP or carry out pigment rework?⌄
No. Pulsar provides laser fading and removal of unwanted scalp micropigmentation. We do not apply new SMP or carry out pigment rework. Any future SMP application or correction must be arranged independently after the scalp has healed appropriately.
