Pulsar Advice and Knowledge Centre | Before, during and after treatment

Preparing for Acne Treatment and Aftercare

Preparation and healing advice differ between an acne facial, laser procedure and scar treatment. Your personal instructions from Pulsar take priority over this general guide.

Chapter 01

Before your appointment

Tell Pulsar what is currently happening with your skin, even if you have had the same treatment before.

Bring an accurate history

List prescription and non-prescription medicines, topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, recent antibiotics, other procedures and any cold sores or difficult healing.

Avoid added irritation

Do not pick spots, deliberately tan or add strong new exfoliants before an assessment. Follow the clinic's specific product-pause instructions.

Tell us if the skin changes

An infection, fresh sunburn, open skin or severe new flare can mean postponing the procedure and obtaining appropriate care.

Chapter 02

On the day of treatment

The planned procedure may change after the clinician reassesses the skin.

Confirm the pathway

The practitioner distinguishes active acne, flat marks and true scars, checks suitability and describes the expected response.

Ask about recovery

Discuss when you may restart usual skincare, exercise and sun exposure precautions for the treatment selected.

Do not self-adjust medicines

Do not stop prescribed acne medicines solely to have a cosmetic treatment without advice from the prescriber.

Chapter 03

Aftercare principles

These points are general; the supplied treatment-specific sheet sets the actual timings.

Keep it gentle

Use only the cleanser and moisturiser approved for your procedure. Avoid picking flakes, crusts or active spots.

Protect healing skin

Avoid sunburn and deliberate tanning; follow the clinician's sun-protection and heat or exercise instructions.

Know when to ask for help

Contact the clinic for unexpected worsening pain, blistering, spreading heat or redness, discharge or delayed healing. Seek urgent medical help for severe symptoms.

Choosing a next step

How Pulsar Can Help

Our Chorley team can assess whether a cosmetic consultation is useful for your concern. We will explain the boundaries of the available service and recommend medical advice when appropriate. The appropriate pathway and any treatment risks are discussed before booking a course.

Important: This guide provides general information. It cannot diagnose acne, identify a lesion from a picture or replace advice from a GP or dermatologist. Results and healing vary.

Frequently asked questions

Questions About Preparing for Acne Treatment and Aftercare

When can I restart retinoids or exfoliating acids?

That depends on the treatment, strength of the product and your recovery. Follow the individual instructions given at your appointment.

Is a breakout after a procedure always purging?

No. Unexpected or significant worsening should be reported rather than dismissed as purging.

Can I treat a fresh spot at home before my appointment?

Avoid squeezing or introducing harsh new products. Ask the clinic if a new inflamed spot changes your suitability.
